New Horizon Europe project launch: Project ForeSight

Press Release 1: Launch of Project ForeSight – Improving last-kilometer navigation & transportation of emergency personnel, equipment and relief items in hazardous and challenging environments

Project ForeSight (Horizon Europe Project 101168521) is set to significantly improve disaster risk management, particularly in the realm of logistics and emergency response, by developing innovative tools and services for responders. Coordinated by the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) in Germany, this cutting-edge project brings together leading organizations from across Europe, including partners from Bulgaria, Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Turkey.

In a world increasingly impacted by climate change, the intensity and frequency of natural disasters are rising. Recent events like the catastrophic floods in Poland, the floods in 2021 in central Europe and the devastating wildfires in Greece underscore the urgent need for more effective disaster response capacities. Project ForeSight tackles these challenges by developing advanced situational awareness, logistical coordination, and tactical reconnaissance solutions, specifically tailored for conditions of low or zero visibility, such as smoke, fire, fog, or dust. At the heart of the project’s mission is the development of technology that enables responders to “see” through visual barriers, allowing for safer navigation and coordination during urban fires, wildfires, and other emergencies. ForeSight’s tools will support last-kilometer logistics for the swift and effective delivery of critical supplies, equipment, and emergency relief items into disaster-stricken zones. For instance, in scenarios like delivering medical aid to flood-ravaged areas or deploying firefighting equipment in remote, smoke-filled forests, these technologies will ensure faster, more coordinated and effective operations.

The project’s tools will undergo extensive testing and validation through Round Tables (RTs), Component Field Tests (CFTs), and System Field Tests (SFTs), involving fire brigades, civil protection agencies, and emergency medical teams, to ensure that the solutions developed have real-world applicability and align with the critical needs of responders while complying with privacy, ethical, and legal standards. By leveraging state-of-the-art technologies, Project ForeSight aims to provide a catalytic upgrade in disaster response, enhancing the ability to manage even the most complex incidents. Ultimately, the project’s outcomes will offer life-saving benefits and support the protection of infrastructure and communities, setting new standards in the management of disasters across Europe and beyond.
